I hope those who advocate gun control are happy with the news from Va. Tech today. You see, this is a prime example of why rigid gun control is a bad idea, and what the consequences can be. Few places are as strictly regulated when it comes to firearms as are college campuses. Those students, the law-abiding ones, were forced to give up responsibility for their own security. They had to rely on the VT campus police and administrators to provide that for them. And they failed miserably.

33 People are dead. 33 young lives snuffed out, because they were rendered defenseless by senseless gun control legislation. Had just one of those students been armed, the number of dead would in all likelyhood be far, far lower. This is a travesty, and this slaughter is a brutal object lesson in what would happen were stricter gun control laws put in place around the country.

According to what I've read, he was using two 9mm pistols. (As an aside, I wanted to muzzle this one 'expert' on Fox News that was claiming the guy was 'heavily armed with powerful automatic weapons'. Ugh). Reloading is a fairly rapid process if you have full magazines ready to slap in; a second or two at best. He most likely had at leas 16 shots per pistol. So its possible he went to one room and opened up, then reloaded on the way to a second, did what he could and killed himself. Without training, and with the scaremongering that occurs relating to firearms, I can see how unarmed young people wouldn't get a shot at him.

Yeah. One of the kids talking about what happened said "He reloaded so fast. He must have had training." And I was thinking "Yeah. Like, he went to a firing range a couple of times. Training."

Right. Dropping a clip, esp. if you aren't concerned about holding onto it and putting in a new one from a holster is a very quick action. Two to three seconds, most likely. What this guy did did not require training, or probably even much practice.

Apparently it was a Glock 17 (a 9mm with a 16+1 capacity) and a .22 of some sort (Between 10 and 17 rounds). This is not heavily armed. It's less than what most police officers carry every day. It's not unreasonable to think that he had between 27 and 35 shots when he started. It's been further reported that he was in at least 4 rooms. So...walk into one room, empty a magazine from each pistol, step outside and drop your magazines, reload, go to the next room, repeat. With victims who are in a panic, and unarmed, you could keep going until you ran out of ammo.

There is at least one hero in this: Liviu Librescu. An Israeli professor, a 76-year old Holocaust survivor who apparently barricaded the door with his body to give his students a chance to jump out the windows. I can't help but wondering how this would have turned out if Dr. Librescu had been armed. There might only be three people dead, instead of an order of magnitude more.
